Kati Rudlova was the first visual artist to ask to share her creativity on yorkrules. Automatic Children are now the first musical artists to proactively put their music in front of the yorkrules audience. Adam Lippman, the group’s founding member and — small world! — an old acquaintance of Friend Charlie, also answered a few of my questions about him and his art.

Who is Adam Lippman?

I am an artist and musician. i fell in love with playing music at an early age - i tried everything from violin to piano to flute to trumpet - it was when i started playing guitar and bass in high school bands that i saw my calling. i haven’t stopped since. when it was time to go to college, i decided my graphic art skills would provide me with the financial stability i needed to stay in new york and pursue music in the night time rock scene. so i went to art school. first at hartford art school, then parsons here in new york city. i also never really gelled with music school students, though i took lessons and theory for many years prior in high school and had a foundation to work with and know how to write. i still think my writing far surpasses my singing, but the singing is getting better and now i get to collaborate and sing what i can sing best and let my bandmates take the reins as often and back me up on my material.

Why do you create?

the two things that drive me to create most are

  • its therapeutic. when i feel something - good, bad, confused, talking about it helps me through it. for me, i talk best through music and lyrics.
  • i love to perform and see other people enjoy the result as much as myself.

Charlie tells me he went on ski vacations with you and your family when you were younger. He also said that you now have children of your own. How did your own childhood influence the parent you are today?

I have taken the best experiences of my childhood, such as those family trips to the mountains, and my parents never-ending support for my musical aspirations, and passed them down. We just came back from another weekend in VT where I got to watch my own children learn and enjoy the great outdoors and join me on the slopes. And of course, there are many musical instruments in their house - both have electric guitars, and there’s an electric keyboard and a full size antique piano that was gifted to me from a musical peer who is also a part of my childhood.

My children both express strong interest in music, and i have not only been teaching them guitar chords, but helping with music homework brought home from school. i hope one day they get to take it as far or farther than i. music more than anything else has been a blessing for me. I am so grateful my parents have always supported that. They still come to shows.

Automatic Children

24 states will hold caucus or primary elections on Tuesday, February 5, possibly anointing the parties’ front-runner presidential candidates. What is your present political awareness, and what does it tell you about your nation?

i consistently have voted democratic.and now more than ever i want to stay the course. im not pleased with the way things have been going in the current administration. i look forward to a new one, and am excited that the playing field is so diverse and new this time around. i still haven’t picked who i’m voting for but have some idea and will narrow down through the year like everyone else. my nation needs change, badly.

What do you hope to achieve in life? What do you think you’ll achieve?

I have always hoped i could make a living doing what i love most - music. but that in and of itself, and especially in nyc are very hard to achieve. i have always done this because i loved it, and still do after half my life spent doing it, but who doesn’t dream of the day they can be highly successful in the trade they are most passionate about?

At this point i’ve learned much about the music industry and where it was and where its going, and so now that i am far less naive, I only hope that i can play and share my music as long as i want to do so - whether or not it pays the bills or makes me a certified rock star.
