When I asked Jen Corace to explain the intellectual process of making her art, she replied, “there is no way for me to separate the emotional or subconscious motivations of the pieces i do. intellectual discussions are fine and well, but it’s not how i process or create or talk. it’s for other people.” Speaking as one of those other people, I’d say that her art, featured here on Show Us Yours, thoroughly substantiates that statement.
Each work that Jen has shared here asks me a question. Why does the girl sleep with the lion? What’s just happened at the party? How did the beauty come to be embraced by the swirling tentacles? But the answer — the intellectualization of her art — is unimportant, because what Jen Corace is communicating to me is not what she thinks, but how she feels.
Who is Jen Corace?
a girl with glasses and bangs.
Why do you create?
it’s my way of talking.
Sleeping with Lions
Describe your immediate neighborhood, and explain why you live where you do.
i just moved back to seattle…to a neighborhood called beacon hill. i came back to be a hermit, to focus on work and push things forward. beacon hill is perfect for that. it is unique from the rest of seattle…much more quiet, more residential. my house is at the top of the hill so it’s perfect for walking around, seeing down into the sound and across to the olympic mountains. walking is where i get all of my ideas to come out and come together…so beacon hill is helping me out with that.

How does the medium you create with influence your artistic voice?
i don’t really differentiate them. i identify with the mediums i use. in fact, the brand of concentrated watercolor that i use to draw in is discontinued. while i have a few bottles that i have hoarded i will eventually run out and i find that i am concerned about finding an apt replacement. i worry that it will change what i am doing or misrepresent my voice.

How much of your time is dedicated to creating art, versus the administration of your art (showings, web updates, PR, etc.)?
i am pretty lazy about updates and pr…i think lazy is the wrong word…i am laid back about all of it. i update the news section with the cold hard facts of anything coming out, i have a blog that mentions things coming up. a majority of my time is spent making pieces…i have been too busy to do mailings.
