We’re wrapping up 2007 in typical Taos style: hot-tubbing in the snow, sipping the sparkling, smoking the sweets, and dining on the best sushi in town (for free! Thanks Mama Hiromi and Gin-san for your continued lavish hospitality.)
May 2008 be this good to us all (though past experience tells me it most likely won’t be.)
Julie My Love (seen here on Santa’s right thigh) tells me it’s okay to take some time off for the holidays (but not too much!) So, with her blessing, that’s what I’ll be doing. The next scheduled post will appear here on Monday, January 7th, 2008. Until then, I wish the entire yorkrules audience (the majority of which is also seen in the above image) a wonderful holiday season!
When I asked Jen Corace to explain the intellectual process of making her art, she replied, “there is no way for me to separate the emotional or subconscious motivations of the pieces i do. intellectual discussions are fine and well, but it’s not how i process or create or … (read more)

Think perezhilton.com. Now replace the celebrities with politicians. Polish the writing, but keep it short and snarky. Dump the doodles for full-blown Photoshop, match the readership and — this one’s important — generate the revenue.
Now you know what I’m thinking. I love what I do with yorkrules, but selling bumper stickers on Cafe Press has not yet allowed me to buy a house (I would’ve applied for a no money down sub-prime loan if I knew the government was going to fix my low interest rate for the next 5 years.)
How can I continue this form of creativity and make money? Perez Hilton’s lesson is clear: I must appeal to a large audience. That is something yorkrules will never do (which is at least partly intentional.) With viewers comes advertisers, and I understand they’re the ones with the money.
If you have any thoughts, advice, or a catchy URL (poli-folly? photopolitical?) please leave a comment (then read Ezra Klein’s astute essay from last Sunday’s L.A. Times.)
I met Charlie Heath on December 14th, 1998. Nine years ago today. It was my inaugural day at LAUNCH, a new media company that would eventually become Yahoo! Music. He’d been hired three weeks earlier. As members of LAUNCH’s Production Department … (read more)
Two things have just happened: Julie’s made another batch of her delicious Mapledamia Icebox Cookies (the maple was once again my idea,) and I’ve rediscovered a few photos I shot 4 months ago when I originally meant to share the recipe here on Cookoo. The ancestors of these … (read more)

I am happy to report that I have at present read only four novels by Charles Dickens. According to Wikipedia, then, I still have 18 more to go, and having so much masterful Dickens writing ahead makes me very happy, indeed. If you haven’t experienced the artful wordsmithery … (read more)
It was fitting that we Ugly Americans began our first Chinese adventure on July 4th, 2006: fitting not only because we are Americans and ugly, but because we love fireworks, too — all points that are made indisputably obvious in the following picture of Charlie and George, taken late … (read more)
Brendan Lott paints snapshots. You can recognize the snapshots he paints because you’ve probably appeared in similar ones yourself. Being thus familiar with this sort of source material, I found it remarkable how Brendan’s oil interpretations illuminate the inherent poetry … (read more)
Today we’re taking a day off from our journey to Qinzhou, though the only facts that differentiate it from our regular days is that we stay in the same moldy hotel for two nights and make no forward progress. The cavorting, riding, swimming, smoking and drinking are … (read more)
