Beat the Devil

September 28, 2007

Beat the Devil (photo © Jackie Roman)I created a new iTunes playlist yesterday that I’ll feature here on Required Listening at the end of the year: Best of 2007. Considering that it’s almost October, you’d think I would’ve done this earlier, but then it didn’t even occur to me until I heard Shine in Exile by Beat the Devil.

Who are Beat the Devil?

A baboon, a vanilla guerrilla, and a chimpanzee. Ooooh! Guess who’s who?

Why do you create?

It’s the only thing in this world that makes my life suck so much less. Everything else is pure crap, a shitty game of keeping up with appearances, whether it’s your job, relationship, and even a lot of the business end of music. When I can actually write and play, I don’t feel like the kid last picked for kickball. The unfortunate reality is that creativity is the most overlooked and unimportant element in being in a band.

(This is the part where you ‘re supposed to grant me a million dollars for all my whining, so I can move to a house in the country and become a recluse.)

Music critics quoted on your website describe you with words like dark, eerie, pain and elegance. Where does the spirit of your music originate?

Refer to question #2.

The lyrics of Shine in Exile are beautiful, but can you help me understand what they are saying?

My baby, I’ve learned to live inside my head.

Why is the elephant featured on your website?

Aaron Lazar, of the Giraffes, designed our website. He had a pet Elephant once, stolen from a Gypsy circus, somewhere in the wilds of Youngstown, Ohio. They adored each other. However, after a few months of bliss in Midwest post-industrial paradise, the elephant died, ingesting too many McCheeseburgers at a birthday party. That’s probably why they decided to call their band the Giraffes.
