Beat the Devil

Beat the Devil (photo © Jackie Roman)I created a new iTunes playlist yesterday that I’ll feature here on Required Listening at the end of the year: Best of 2007. Considering that it’s almost October, you’d think I would’ve done this earlier, but then it didn’t even occur to me until I heard Shine in Exile by … (read more)

Meet Me at the Gayairport

Mr. Yorkisgay

Active diplomacy.

By the time you read this, I’ll be gone (if my flight’s on time; this is set to auto-post at the exact moment I should be lifting off into
Los Cielos above Los Angeles.) I’m heading back to China for another month as senior field content producer for yorkrules (still on spec.)

I’ll attempt to send dispatches from the Provinces, but because I won’t, I’ve already got the next month of content set to auto-post. Even if I should die overseas (presently 7-to-1 − sorry, baby!) yorkrules will carry on (at least until October 26, by which point I’m sure someone will have confirmed for you that, yes, York was mauled to death while trying to get one more jumping shot with a Panda.)

The new face of friendly.

Fiasco

Purchase Fiasco on Amazon.comBook titles sell books, so it’s understandable that they sometimes hyperbolize their contents with an overwrought word or phrase. Had I read an untitled copy of Thomas E. Ricks’ study of “the American military adventure in Iraq,” I would have suggested Fiasco myself. … (read more)

Heiko Müller

Never Wake Up by Heiko MüllerI’m a little slow on the uptake. I didn’t start listening to Depeche Mode until my mid-twenties, I didn’t start watching Lost until its second season was almost complete, and I still don’t use text messaging. It’s not surprising, then, that it didn’t occur to me to start collecting the … (read more)

World War II G.I. (The National Archives)In a sidebar of Paul Lieberman’s recent Los Angeles Times article on Ken Burns’ new documentary about the Second World War, the filmmaker considers the correlations and deviations between the war in his film and the war on our televisions. Shared sacrifice, anyone? … (read more)

Blues for Allah

Blues for AllahThe framed portrait of Che Guevara and the vintage Visit Palestine travel poster on the living room wall hint at Vicki’s political leanings. But she’s no armchair liberal, pontificating on people and places a world away. She talks of her “Palestinian terrorist lover” with a laugh and … (read more)

MxM : Vicki VThe night breeze visited us from over the ocean as Zach, Aaron, Vicki and I sat sated by her homemade fig & almond tart, Cognacs in hand and smoke in air. It was a fine evening for the return of the Minute by Minute mutual interview series. Learn more about MxM. … (read more)

Robert Standish

September 3, 2007 | 1 Comment

Untitled (Woman with Folded Arms) by Robert StandishI wasn’t immediately impressed by Robert Standish’s images. Big deal, I initially thought, anybody can take an out-of-focus picture of street lights at night. Then I realized that these weren’t his photos, but his photorealistic paintings. Rippling water, light trails, shallow depth-of … (read more)
