I previously wrote that Mozilla’s Firefox browser is superior to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Now we’ll talk about why that is. One word (or is it two?): add-ons. Add-ons are free, easy-to-install extensions that give your Firefox browser additional capabilities. There are hundreds - probably thousands - of these add-ons available on the Firefox website. I’ve got a number of them installed on my browser, and I’ll share a few of my favourites with you.
StumbleUpon
The Web’s a very, very big place. There’s a lot of stuff out there you have yet to discover, and StumbleUpon helps you do it. When you install this add-on (a two-click procedure,) you’ll be asked what you’re interested in. Topics include art, history, religion, sports, commerce, and several additional choices.
Within each topic, you can further refine your particular interests down to specific sub-topics. Within the Home/Living topic, there are nearly 40 sub-topics, ranging from Alcoholic Drinks to Wine. Okay, that may not sound so impressive, but it is an alphabetical list. There’s also everything from Antiques, Babies, and Beer to Teen Parenting, Vegetarian, and Wedding.
I’ve selected about 35 various items of interest - including Adult Humor (yes, you can stumble for porn,) Art, Bizarre/Oddities, Hedonism, Independent Film, Weblogs, and Writing - for my stumbling.
Once you’ve completed this step, a Stumble! button will appear near the top of your browser, and whenever you click it, you’ll be taken to a relevant website that other Stumblers have marked as being worthy of your attention.

When I click on my Stumble! button, here’s a few of the places it takes me:
- Les orgasmes dans le monde
- The 30-Second Bunnies Theatre Library
- free university lectures
- Sketch Swap
- Where did the time go?
And, finally, to this editorial cartoon (you know how I like those.)
Map This
Mapping and driving directions. How did we manage these before the Internet? Not surprisingly, there are several mapping add-ons available for Firefox. Map This happens to be the one I’ve got installed.
With this add-on, you can select an address on a webpage, right-click, choose Map This from the drop-down menu, and…

…a new tab opens up with the address mapped on Google Maps or Yahoo! Maps (your choice.) Select Map To This and directions from your home to the selected address will be displayed.
Answers
What’s that word mean? Who’s he? When was this? These and many other questions that arise during your web browsing can be answered with the appropriately-named Answers add-on. Many add-ons make use of the drop-down menu that appears on a right-click. The Answers add-on, like Map This, is one of them.
Select the text in question, right-click, and choose Look up on Answers.com.

Next thing you know, you’re at Answers.com, and the all the information that Google, Wikipedia, and a variety of online dictionaries and encyclopedias can scrounge up on your selected text is compiled in a new tab, ready for your edification. Firefox rocks.
