If you’ve ever googled York rules, then you’d be familiar with the York-Antwerp Rules of 1994. The rules themselves are rather impenetrable, but Rupp’s Insurance & Risk Management Glossary explains them for us lay folks as “a set of rules, initially agreed upon in 1890 and last revised in 1950, by which ocean marine general average losses are adjusted.”The fact that they ranked first on Google’s search results, followed by The York County Criminal Rules of Court, The York City Association Football and Athletic Club Rules, York County Orphans’ Court Rules, and a link to a picture of a girl in a Playboy bunny costume at the University of York that, according to an attached comment, “rules,” tells you that, of all the Internet users in the world interested in York and rules, most are scuttled skippers and covetous college kids - not, as they should be, fans of this site.
But then, fans of yorkrules.com - like you - being generally smarter and more perceptive than the rest, have already registered my use of the past tense in the first sentence of the preceding paragraph. That was, of course, intentional, because now, when the crew of a sinking ship or a horny English college student searches for the most popular, relevant page on the World Wide Web dedicated to York and rules, they’ll find us.
Being on the first page of search results is the desire of almost all websites; the top slot is the Holy Grail of page ranking. Search engine optimization (SEO) consultants are employed by companies large and small in their efforts to break into the top 10, and here we’ve done it just by being more entertaining than a variety of civil, criminal, and recreational rules compendiums (and one partially nude chick - let’s not forget that!) I’m glad that you’re enjoying this ride with me, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the trip (which, being that we’re now #1, can only be into irrelevant obscurity. How the mighty are about to fall!)
