I Hate L.A.: The Book

December 18, 2006

I hate L.A.With the gracious support of some and the naysaying of others, the I Hate L.A. book project marches toward published victory (or into the pathetic pages of my as-yet-to-be-written autobiography, Box of a Million Broken Dreams: The Bitter Life & Resentful Times of Royal York Funston.)

In addition to 90 or so relevant quotes, I think including some short essays by such appropriate voices as Randy Newman and David Cross will really make for an entertaining read. Throw in a hundred or so licensed images of L.A. at its worst - traffic, pollution, Skid Row and absurd wealth - and we’ll be on bookstore shelves before Morningstar can say (again) “Love it or leave it.”

If you come across any good quotes on the subject (or you have constructive criticism for how to improve the idea,) please let me know.

Here are a few of the latest additions:

Until recently, I lived in Los Angeles. I had been there for a little under nine years. I love Los Angeles, to the extent that I’ve had a number of wet dreams in which I end up fucking the city. And unlike other wet dreams, there is no shame when I wake. Only regret that this dream will never be realized.

-David Cross

I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They’re beautiful. Everybody’s plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic.

-Andy Warhol

In Los Angeles, it’s like they jog for two hours a day and then they think they’re morally right. That’s when you want to choke people, you know?

-Liam Neeson
