This Year

September 27, 2006

Anthony at Love RideLaughter is reputably the best medicine, but its efficacy in regards to cancer is debatable. Those of us with darker senses of humour - bordering on pitch black at times - contemplated wagering on when Anthony would leave this world. Even he periodically engaged in joking about his own death pool.

But doctors’ estimates of months to live quickly changed to weeks, and before anyone had adjusted to this bleaker timeline, the end arrived within days. Cancer’s cruelty is not simply that it may take someone you love, but that it will do so on its own inscrutable schedule.

When The Mountain Goats sing, “I am gonna make it through this year, if it kills me,” they’re referring to the inequity of youthful passion rather than terminal illness, but as one both young and sanguine, I expect Anthony must have said the same of himself in his final year. And so Radio Macabre continues with This Year.
